Ahmedabad: A high-security inmate, Ahmed Mohiyuddin Sayyed, was attacked by fellow prisoners inside Sabarmati Central Jail, Gujarat, on Tuesday. Sayyed, arrested for his alleged involvement in a terror plot using ricin chemical, was promptly rescued by the jail authorities before the situation could escalate further.
High-Security Custody
Ahmed Sayyed was being held in a high-security cell when the assault occurred. Authorities confirmed that the incident was contained swiftly, preventing any serious injury.
Background of Arrest
Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had arrested Sayyed on 8 November from Hyderabad. According to ATS officials, Sayyed was allegedly involved in manufacturing the highly toxic chemical ricin and had links to the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP). Alongside him, ATS also arrested Azad Suleman Sheikh and Mohammad Suhel Mohammad Salim, and conducted raids at locations in Delhi, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad.
Education and Alleged Radical Activities
ATS DIG Sunil Joshi stated that Ahmed Sayyed is highly educated, holding an MBBS degree from China, and was ideologically extremist. Investigations suggest he planned fundraising and recruitment to carry out large-scale terror operations. Interrogations also revealed that his handlers attempted to supply weapons via drones from the Pakistan border.
Weapons Recovered
During the arrest, ATS seized two Glock pistols, a Beretta pistol, and 30 live cartridges from Sayyed. Authorities are continuing their investigation into his network and the extent of the planned terrorist activities.
This incident highlights the persistent threat posed by extremist elements and the challenges faced by jail authorities in managing high-risk inmates.
